NEWPORT — The first group of around 300 Vermont National Guard soldiers will be returning home tomorrow.
The soldiers, some deployed overseas for close to a year, will all make it home for Christmas, with December 10 being the date most will be back in Vermont.
“I am incredibly proud of these Vermonters and their families for the work they all put in to accomplish their missions over the last 10 months,” said Gov. Phil Scott.
Over 950 Vermonters deployed to various locations across Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia.
In January 2021, the 172nd Law Enforcement Detachment was sent to support US Europe Command.
The 3rd Battalion of the 172nd Infantry departed in February for the U.S. Central Command, and took part in a variety of missions, including security in Kabul, Afghanistan during evacuations in August.
