POWNAL — A 40-year-old man from Massachusetts was arrested following an incident in Pownal yesterday.
Police say that they observed an ATV travelling south at a high rate of speed with no functioning headlights on US Route 7 at around 9:30 p.m.
Police say they attempted to stop the ATV, which fled south, but they did not pursue.
They encountered the same ATV along with the operator, identified as Waylon Hawkins, of North Adams, MA, parked in the breakdown lane of US Route 7.
While speaking with Hawkins, police detected several signs of impairment.
Hawkins was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and transported to the Shaftsbury Barracks for processing.
He was later released on citation to appear in court to answer to the charge of attempting to elude and DUI #1.
