NEWPORT — The Northeast Kingdom Regional Airport (NEKI) in Newport is one of 14 projects that will receive a share of the more than $4.5 million in federal grants recently announced to promote economic development across Vermont.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation was awarded $492,000 for the design, permitting, and construction of a new terminal building to replace the outdated existing facility at NEKI.

The grant was awarded through the Northern Border Regional Commission.

“As we begin to rebuild following the worst of the pandemic, projects like these will help secure the foundation for a strong recovery in our communities,” Gov. Phil Scott said.

Funding for other projects will help local communities address critical water infrastructure needs, open new childcare programs, develop outdoor recreation infrastructure and expand the state’s food hubs which support the distribution of local agricultural products.
