MORGAN — Now in its eleventh year, the Eli Goss Memorial Ice Fishing Tournament reported a record turnout this year, raising over $16,000 that will go toward college scholarships awarded to local students.

Organizers say they knew this year was going to be big when after the first three hours of registration they saw as many people register as they had in total during previous years.

The event brought in 176 participants, including more youth than ever before.

“Several residents commented that they had not seen so much activity on Seymour Lake in a long time,” said Stephanie Goss, one of the tournament coordinators.

Goss says one of her favorite things to do during the event is providing free food to participants.

This year they handed out 80 breakfast sandwiches, pizzas, and hot soup on both days.

The outdoor awards ceremony on Seymour Lake included a free hot lunch, a silent auction, and both a prize and 50/50 raffle.

Participants from ages 3 to 63 participated in family tournament games which included the “Two Man Sled Pull” and 6 heats of the “Tip-Up Run.”

Organizers say that tournament hooded sweatshirt sales contributed a large amount to the scholarship funds, and they were able to sell all Eli Hoodies within two days following the event.

All of these combined efforts throughout the tournament resulted in just over $16,000 raised for the Eli Fund.

Goss says this allows them to increase the scholarship value and assures the necessary start-up costs for next year’s event.
