NEWPORT — With the 2021 winter ice fishing season underway and Free Fishing Day coming up, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says they will also be offering new educational patrols on Lake Memphremagog in February.

Free Fishing Day will take place this Saturday, January 30. Anyone, resident or nonresident, may go fishing in Vermont without a fishing license on this date.

In addition, Vermont State Game Wardens and the department’s education staff will be roaming Memphremagog on February 20, to offer pointers or just chat with anglers about their season.

They will be at Memphremagog’s South Bay, in Newport, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

They will move to Whipple Point in Derby Line from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

These educational patrols will last approximately one to two hours, and no registration is required.

Participants should bring their own equipment and set up on the ice to fish.

The Fish and Wildlife Department has stated that face masks, social distancing, and fishing licenses will be required that day.
