Newport man found asleep in vehicle with gun following break-in

NEWPORT — Police arrested a man passed out in a car with a firearm following a break-in early Friday morning.

At around 1:45 a.m. officers responded to a residence on West End Avenue for a report of a residential break-in.

The homeowner reported that the man was in possession of a handgun and was then allegedly going through vehicles on the property.

Officers located Brian Dodds, 34, of Newport, asleep in the driver’s seat of one of the homeowner’s vehicles and slumped over the center console.

Police say they removed the firearm from him before waking him and placing him under arrest.

Dodds was charged with unlawful trespass, and possessing a deadly weapon while committing a crime.
