ORLEANS — Recent Lake Region High School graduate and Orleans resident William Coburn has won the first-ever William T. Hawkens Memorial Award.

The award was recently established for Lake Region seniors who exhibit academic excellence, leadership in the community, and plan to pursue higher education.

“I am truly honored to be the first recipient of the William T. Hawkens memorial award,” Coburn said. “Next year I will be attending Saint Michael’s College in Colchester and pursuing a career in education.”

Coburn says he is excited about what the future holds and thankful for the investment in his education.

William “Bill” T. Hawkens was a beloved longtime Orleans and Derby resident and Ethan Allen executive who coached high school basketball and served on the school board in Orleans.

The award celebrates his commitment to his community and belief in self-improvement with an annual award.

The award was founded by his family after Mr. Hawkens’ passing in 2017.
