NEWPORT — Last month two Vermont Foodbank refrigerated trucks arrived at the North Country Hospital campus to prepare for their first-ever VeggieVanGo food distribution in Newport.
The foodbank provides this program at many of the other Vermont hospitals as well as schools throughout the state.
A great corps of volunteers from the Vermont Department of Health, NEKCA, the hospital, and the community joined with the food bank to assist with traffic guidance, greeting those driving in, loading food into vehicles, and counting out the appropriate shares for each customer.
The foodbank team offers recipes and cooking tips and are there to provide information about 3SquaresVT and more.
In just over two hours, fresh food was picked up by individuals for 225 families.
Each family share included two gallons of milk, an assorted box of other dairy products, frozen chicken, and an abundance of fresh produce.
The Vermont Foodbank trucks will return to North Country Hospital on Wednesday, August 12, with similar provisions.
The front parking lot will be open for food distribution on August 12 from 9 – 11 a.m.
