NEWPORT — A Newport man wanted by police in connection with a car theft last month was arrested last night.

Jonah Monfette, 36, was arrested on an existing warrant with charges of aggravated operation without consent of owner, driving with license suspended, and violation of conditions of release.

On November 18, police received a report from a man who told them Monfette had agreed to drive him to the emergency room two nights before after the man had been injured at a bar in Barton.

After driving the victim to the emergency room, Monfette allegedly left with his vehicle.

The following day, the man attempted to retrieve the car at an address in Newport when he learned that Monfette had taken the vehicle to Maine.

Newport police say they confirmed through their investigation that the victim’s vehicle was taken from the hospital by Monfette.

Police also determined that his license was criminally suspended.

The vehicle was located on November 21 in Concord, New Hampshire.

Monfette was taken into custody late yesterday after coming into contact with Vermont State Police.

He was arraigned today in Orleans County Superior Court and released on conditions.
