WESTMORE — The Vermont Agency of Transportation says they will reopen Vermont Route 5A in Westmore next to Lake Willoughby to thru traffic later today.

The road was closed for 2 1/2 weeks to stabilize a rock ledge next to the road.

While the road will be open to traffic, high winds this week curtailed work as climbers were not able to complete the job.

As a result, there will be one-lane alternating traffic on Saturday, November 2 , and Monday through Wednesday of next week.

The rock stabilization project involved scaling loose material from the ledge face and pinning blocks in place to prevent future failures.

This site has a history of rockfall failures, including one that occurred in March affecting travel on Route 5A until large rocks that fell into the road could be removed.

It is anticipated additional failures will occur this winter if remediation is not completed.
