HOLLAND — A man was injured, and several calves killed after a barn fire broke out late Tuesday morning in Holland.

Firefighters were notified at around 11:40 a.m. of the incident at the Champney farm, located on School Road.

Cows were seen wandering the area after being herded out of the barn.

While trying to stop the fire, a worker at the farm suffered burn injuries and had to be transported to North Country Hospital.

Several others suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene.

Crews from Derby Line, and Stanstead, Quebec, were able to contain the fire, and keep it from spreading throughout the barn.

Around six claves were killed in the incident.

The fire originated when fuel ignited while a piece of gas-powered equipment inside the barn was being worked on.

A section of the barn will have to be torn down due to the damage, but most of it is salvageable.

There is no update yet as to the condition of the injured man.

  1. The injured man is doing okay. The burns to his hands are the most severe, with the thoughts of at least a month for healing.
