NEWPORT — A 32-year-old man was arrested after a police chase in Newport Center on Friday.

Tyler Howard, of Newport, is being charged with attempting to elude, resisting arrest, and negligent operation.

The incident took place at around 9:00 p.m. when police say they initiated a traffic stop on a motorcycle for defective equipment near the intersection of VT Route 105 and VT Route 100.

The motorcycle operator, identified as Howard, allegedly failed to stop and darted behind Hilliker’s Store, where he got off his motorcycle and attempted to flee into a nearby residence.

The trooper grabbed Howard, who police say failed to listen to commands.

According to the report, at one point Howard attempted to reach into his jacket where he stated he had a firearm.

He was placed in handcuffs and resisted arrest, police say.

Newport Police later arrived and assisted at the scene. Howard was placed under arrest and transported to Derby for processing.

He was later released on a citation, as well as issued two traffic tickets for failure to obey an officer and having defective equipment.

The traffic tickets carry a total of $497 in fines and four points against his license if convicted.
