NEWPORT — Authorities say an inmate at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport was recently charged with an escape attempt that took place back in September.
On September 23, 2017, police were contacted by the Department of Corrections regarding an inmate who they believed had attempted to escape from the facility.
The inmate, identified as 46-year-old Shawn Maskell, had reportedly climbed over two interior fences and was located within the perimeter fence where commercial trucks enter and exit the facility.
Maskell did not make it outside the perimeter fence and was taken into custody by DOC officers.
As a result of the investigation, Maskell was charged with attempted escape and unlawful trespass.
He will answer to the charges in Orleans Criminal Court on November 21.
