WESTMORE — Vermont state game wardens are seeking tips to help solve a case of a moose that was poached in Westmore.

The cow moose was shot from the road out of season and at night on Saturday, September 23.

After poachers shot the moose, they dragged the animal on the road behind their truck over 11 miles to the town of Orleans.

The animal was left to rot in the 80-degree heat by the side of Hollow Road off Route 58 in Orleans.

The cow moose was lactating, indicating she likely had a calf with her.

“These poachers demonstrated tremendous disrespect for the law and for this moose,” said Col. Jason Batchelder, Vermont’s chief game warden. “We’re asking for anyone with information about this incident to come forward so that we can hold the people that did this accountable.”

Vermont’s regulated moose hunting seasons are in October, and are limited to a small number of hunting permits that are allocated through a lottery system.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call 1-800-752-5378.

  1. What a horrific act this is, not only to the cow but her baby who is probably starving or killed by predators. Then to drag and let this poor cow rot in the heat makes no sense at all. I hope you find these people and prosecute them more than a slap on the hand which is how VT usually handles animal abuse. This just makes me ill.

  2. Let’s hope the laws increase so this stupid shit will stop happening. Obviously a slap on the hand isn’t enough to teach a lesson!

  3. Notice to the Public:

Whatever the penalties are for this crime they all are not enough! Contact your legislators and DEMAND much stricter penalties for wildlife abuse.

  4. As moose populations collapse due to overhunting, ticks / disease, the 6th mass extinction and climate change, ZERO hunting permits should be given.

Hunting is a 20th century philosophy for wildlife that has bee proved entirely disfunctional. It is even worse while the 6th mass extinction and climate change become the defining feature of the 21st century.

  5. what can you really say I can,t use the words I feel but were their a will their a way trust me ,, you a– holes you days of getting away with it are numbered these guys and gals are more deicated today then ever before just like their seems to be more fools that just like to shoot and waste over and over again L Williams Sr

  6. I was driving to Evensville from my home in Barton and couldnt help noticing the blood trail on the road. I was thinking it looked like the driver was swerving from one side of the lane to the other as if to shake what ever was hit, loose. I am really saddened to think there is someone out ther who would do such a thing. Let’s hope justice is served. Is a public dragging of the offender unreasonable in this case?
