NEWPORT — A 55-year-old man from Newport was sentenced last week after pleading guilty to stabbing a woman in 2015.
Roberto Vargas will serve a sentence of 20-years-to-life for attacking a woman with a knife in Newport.
The incident took place back in July of 2015 when Newport police were called to a report of a woman being stabbed on Central Street at around 12:26 a.m.
According to court records, police found the victim lying on a bed with injuries to her neck and stomach.
She was transported to North Country Hospital by Newport Ambulance to be treated for her injuries.
Vargas was taken into custody, and when questioned by police, admitted that he stabbed the woman.
He pled guilty to a second-degree attempted murder charge and will serve a minimum of 15 years on his 20-years-to-life sentence for the crime.
