NEWPORT — Authorities say the inmate who attempted suicide at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport last week, has died.

At around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday, Joshua Bittner, 26, of Fairfax was found hanging in his cell.

Police say their initial investigation shows that Bittner’s injuries were self-inflicted, but they are continuing to investigate the incident.

After being found in his cell Bittner was transported to North Country Hospital and finally to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where he died Friday night.

According to Corrections Department records, Bittner was out of prison on furlough but returned to Department of Corrections custody in February on accusations including aggravated domestic assault with a weapon, as well as other charges.

There will be a review of the incident by the Agency of Human Services and the Defender General.
