NEWPORT — An inmate at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport is in critical condition after authorities say he tried to commit suicide on Thursday.
At around 10 p.m. police were notified by the Department of Corrections staff of an inmate that had been found hanging in his cell by a cellmate.
Staff at Northern State Correctional Facility intervened, providing emergency medical care.
The inmate, identified as Joshua Bittner, 26, of Fairfax, was first transported to North Country Hospital and later to UVM Medical Center for further treatment.
Bittner remains in critical condition at UVM Medical Center.
Police say early indications are that the hanging was a self-inflicted event, though the incident remains under investigation.
How do we know it was self-inflicted? The FBI ought to investigate the prisoners and the guards.
