NEWPORT — The Memphremagog Watershed Association has been awarded the 2016 Harriet A. Canfield Conservation Award, for its work along the Clyde River in Newport.

The Four Seasons Garden Club submitted an application on behalf of the organization to the Federated Garden Club of Vermont, citing its efforts to preserve wildlife habitat in the river and to stabilize and restore the river bank by planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, and perennial flowers.

Three projects MWA has implemented in that location include planting a shoreline buffer, adding a rain barrel to collect water runoff from the roof of the North Country Chamber of Commerce building, and planting rain gardens on either side of the building to collect water and allow it to be absorbed into the soil.

These efforts keep water from going directly into the river.
