NEWPORT — The standoff on Pleasant Street ended early Wednesday morning, with the arrest of a 41-year-old Newport man.

The incident started at around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday when the Newport Police Department responded to 501 Pleasant Street for a report of a man dressed in camouflage threatening his neighbors with an assault rifle.

Police identified the suspect as Daniel Kelley, and say they started having a conversation with him.

After speaking with a witness, police say they attempted to make contact with Kelley again, at which point he slammed his window shut and opened the door to his apartment with a military-style helmet, shield, and an assault rifle.

Police say they were not successful in talking with Kelley at this point, and called for additional resources to assist.

After a long standoff involving a crisis negotiator, at approximately 2:00 a.m. police made entry into the building and Kelley was taken into custody.

He was transported to North Country Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, three counts of reckless endangerment, three counts of using a weapon in the commission of a felony.
