NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department announced yesterday that they have hired two new officers.

Michael Chappell, of Canaan, and Jesse Testut, of Island Pond, are the two newest members of the department.

Both have completed the part-time Police Academy, and have successfully completed the Newport Police Department’s field training program.

Officer Testut served in the Navy for seven years, including a tour to Japan and Guam, with some of his duties including mobile security. He also has over a year of experience working for the Vermont Department of Corrections.

Officer Chappell is currently a certified EMT, working for a year and a half in this field. He is also a volunteer fireman serving two fire departments.

“We want to congratulate both of these officers and welcome them to the Newport Police Department,” a statement issued by the department read.

There are now a total of 12 officers in Newport.
