NEWPORT — This Saturday at Parker Pie Wings, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., a fundraiser is taking place to help a local family who have been struggling to start over after a kitchen fire left them losing a family pet, and their home needing a complete overhaul.

John Snyder and his wife Wendy Little built the house themselves in 2005. John used to work in restoration carpentry. On January 7, 2015, John came home early from work and saw black smoke billowing out of the house. He called 911.

A short in the dishwasher was to blame. A water pipe melted which helped to control the fire itself, but the smoke damage destroyed almost everything else.

Their dog, Higgins, survived the incident, but they did lose their beloved cat, Elijah.

John is a math teacher at the Stevens School, and Wendy is the manager at Newport Naturals. Their nine year old daughter attends Brownington School.

The fundraiser is Saturday at Parker Pie Wings. There will be local entertainment, including comedy, singing, a band, and even Wendy’s brother-in-law, Trevor the Games Man. A $10 donation at the door will help the family as they have been displaced as the house gets a complete overhaul. There will also be a silent auction for items donated from local businesses. All proceeds go directly to the family.
