Derby man leads police on high-speed chase early Saturday morning

NEWPORT – A 26-year-old man from Derby is facing numerous charges after leading police on a high-speed chase through Newport Center early Saturday morning.

Police say Nicholas Brock was traveling on Vermont Route 100 in Newport Center, when they attempted to stop him for a motor vehicle violation at around 1:50 a.m. Police say Brock failed to stop, and began fleeing at high rates of speed.

State Police pursued the vehicle through Newport Center until the vehicle crashed at the intersection of Cross Road and Searles Road. Brock then allegedly fled into a field on Searless Road.

With the assistance of the Newport Police Department, Brock was located in the field and taken into custody without further incident.

He was found under the influence of alcohol with a criminally suspended license as well as being in violation of several Orleans County conditions of release.

Brock was charged with attempting to elude a police officer, careless and negligent operation, driving with a criminally suspended license, DUI, and violations of conditions of release.

Brock was taken to Northern State Correctional Facility, and is to be held until his place of residence can be verified by the court for a 24 hour curfew.
