DERBY — No more waiting outside in the cold, flipping through the same limited collection of movies. Now you can come inside and browse the aisles of close to 3,000 movies and video games, because on Friday, New England Video opened its doors in the Ridge View Ninety-One plaza in Derby.
For owner Sheryl Fortin, the video business is something she’s been involved with for a long time. Her brother opened the first New England Video, which used to be located across the street from McDonalds in Derby. She worked at that store for a time. Then her cousin, Linda Bingham, brought the New England Video store to Newport, where she worked as well.
Now she is the proud owner at the new location, in the same plaza as Roasters Cafe. The grand opening was held on Friday, and the store has been busy ever since.
The deals are still the same like they were at the old New England Video in Newport. You can rent three old movies for three dollars, for three days. New releases are three dollars for the night, but if you rent them on Saturday, they don’t have to be returned until Monday.
New England Video also gets most new releases 90 days before other video rental companies, so if there is a specific movie you want to see, most likely you’ll be able to get it there first.
The store also offers all the things that make movie night complete, including candy, cotton candy, popcorn, and soda.
The store’s sign was designed by Newport business NEK Decals, which did a great job to make sure that the store is not to be missed while driving down Route 5.
