Tragic death on bike path in Derby

DERBY — Authorities believe that cardiac arrest was the cause of the tragic death of a 33-year-old man from Beebe Plain, who passed away yesterday after collapsing on the bike path in Derby.

Police say that Michael Scherer, and his wife were out for a run along the bike path Sunday morning, when Michael began to experience difficulty breathing, and shortness of breath.

Michael was forced to stop running, and later collapsed. According to a statement issued by the Vermont State Police, Michael became unresponsive, at which point his wife immediately called 911 and began to perform CPR. The statement issued by police goes on to say:

EMS responded and transported Michael to the North Country Hospital in Newport where attempts to resuscitate Michael were unsuccessful. Members from the Vermont State Police and an Assistant Medical Examiner responded to the hospital to investigate the death. Preliminary indication are that the death was a result of cardiac arrest. Michael’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. 

According to a few eyewitness accounts, the incident happened near the area of the bike path that runs through Sunset Acres.
