NEWPORT — A 43-year-old man from Coventry was taken into police custody on Tuesday after slamming his truck into a telephone pole in Newport while intoxicated.

Police arrested William Beaumont and charged him with Driving While Intoxicated, Driving with a Criminally Suspended License, and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

The incident happened at around 9 p.m., when the Newport Police Department recieved numerous calls to 911, stating that a dark colored Dodge Dakota had crashed into a telephone pole at the intersection of 2nd and Prospect Street.

One of the 911 callers had advised police that the truck was attempting to leave the scene of the accident.

By the time officers had arrived, the truck had left in an unknown direction. Newport Police were able to locate the vehicle shortly after arriving on the scene.

Beaumont was subsequently arrested and charged in the incident.

Nobody was injured as a result of the accident, but there were fluids that had leaked out of Beaumont’s truck after the crash, which required Newport City Fire to clean up and dispose of properly.
