NEWPORT — A Brownington man was sentenced to serve up to 12 years in prison for charges related to an incident last April.

Joseph A. Hoadley, 33, was sentenced on charges of 1st degree aggravated domestic assault, unlawful mischief, failure to report to the Sexual Offender Registry, and a violation of probation.

Hoadley changed his plea to guilty the morning his jury trial was scheduled to begin.

He was sentenced to 18 months to 3 years to serve on the aggravated domestic assault and a concurrent 1-2 years to serve on the sex offender registry violation.

According to court records, during the assault, Hoadley choaked the victim with both hands for “what seemed like 30 seconds,” and would not let her leave the residence by physically blocking the door and pushing her away when she attempted to approach him.

His probation was revoked, with a total sentence of 5 1/2 – 12 years to serve in jail.
