NEWPORT — Police responded to a head-on crash on Highland Avenue yesterday.

On Thursday, at approximately 12:17 p.m., Newport Police, the Newport Fire Department and Newport Ambulance services responded to a report of a crash near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Alderbrook Road.

Two vehicles with significant front-end damage had come to rest, one facing west in the eastbound lane of Highland Avenue, the other facing east in the embankment off the road.

One of the drivers was treated on scene by paramedics and was subsequently transported to the hospital with injuries that police say are not believed to be life-threatening.

The second driver was treated on scene for minor injuries.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, but police say the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver traveling west on Highland Avenue crossed the center line and struck the car driving in the opposite direction.

As a result of the crash, a section of Highland Avenue was closed for approximately 45 minutes.
