NEWPORT — A man wanted by the Newport Police Department in connection with an August break-in was arrested in Holyoke, Mass. last night.

Daniel Greenwood, 41, of Troy, was arrested inside a McDonald’s restaurant in Holyoke Monday night, by a Holyoke Police lieutenant.

He is expected to face additional charges in Massachusetts today, and Newport police will then be seeking for him to be extradited back to Vermont.

An arrest warrant was issued for Greenwood on Aug. 8, after he allegedly broke into the West Side Deli on Highland Avenue.

At approximately 4:42 a.m., an officer was dispatched for a report of a person inside the store. Upon arrival, the officer began searching the area and was joined by an off-duty officer who was passing through the area.

The officers located a man, later identified as Greenwood, on one side of the building and attempted to establish a perimeter.

Greenwood then allegedly emerged from a bush where he had been hiding and ran toward a gold SUV parked nearby. One of the officers attempted to subdue him and ordered him to stop, but he allegedly revved the SUV’s engine and eventually accelerated onto Highland Avenue at a high rate of speed.

The officer lost sight of the speeding vehicle, but investigators later located a piece of the vehicle’s front end, including a license plate registered to another vehicle owned by Greenwood.

“Teamwork by multiple agencies has today resulted in the apprehension of a dangerous fugitive, and I am very grateful for the assistance rendered to the Newport Police Department by our neighbors and partners,” Newport Police Chief DiSanto said.

In Vermont, Greenwood will face charges of attempted burglary, unlawful mischief, attempting to elude, gross negligent operation, excessive speed, and resisting arrest

  1. Dear god, please don’t let Howard VanBenthuysen let this guy back out under any circumstances. Lock him up for life.

    • Judge Bent is the new judge. VanBenthuysen was more strict then Bent is but the only way he will be looking at any severe amount of time would be his habitual offender status. Won’t get life for those charges anyway
