NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department is investigating a home invasion that occurred Thursday morning.

Police were dispatched to a home on Fernwood Circle for a report of a break-in at around 11:34 a.m.

Police say a man broke into the home through a window. When confronted by the homeowner, he claimed he was attempting to hide out while being chased by another person.

Shortly after being confronted, the suspect, described as a white male in his late teens or early 20’s and wearing a blue shirt, tan pants, sneakers and carrying a large white mobile phone, fled the home and ran east on Fernwood Circle.

Officers were unable to locate anyone matching that description in the immediate area.

The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit responded for mutual aid.

“This is an active investigation and we are aggressively searching for this suspect,” Chief DiSanto said. “We encourage anyone who may have information about the suspect to come forward and help us identify him.”

Anyone who believes they might have information related to this case is encouraged to call the Newport Police at 802-334-6733.
