DANVILLE — Police say a 33-year-old man from Danville died this morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after authorities arrived at his home which was on fire.

At around 9:50 a.m. police responded to a request for assistance from the Danville Fire Department, who were responding to a structure fire located at 1450 Bruce Badger Memorial Highway.

When the fire department arrived at the residence, they say a gunshot was heard coming from a nearby wooded area.

A man was then located by police slumped over on the ground. The male suffered from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say the man was the owner of the residence and was identified as Paul Munkittrick, 33, of Danville.

“There was nothing suspicious in nature and there is no risk to the public at this time,” Detective Trooper Chris Pilner with the Vermont State Police said in a written statement.

Munkittrick was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Police say the investigation into his death continues, and that authorities are investigating the cause of the fire.
