NEWPORT — Police officers are at the scene of an armed standoff on Pleasant Street in Newport.
The situation started at around 2 p.m. at 501 Pleasant Street.
Police say the suspect, identified as Dan Kelley, got into an altercation with a neighbor.
He is reported to be armed with a rifle.
A neighboring apartment building on Pleasant Street has been evacuated.
Residents are not being allowed to return home at this point, however, the Newport Municipal Building is open for people to use if they have nowhere else to go.
I believe that this situation is being handled in a ridiculous way. It wasn’t a serious situation to begin with and Dan would never hurt anyone. The accusations made against him were false. It would be nice if people would just leave this man alone! He is a law abiding citizen who minds his own business.
