NEWPORT — A 56-year-old woman from Coventry is facing charges after police said she was driving Thursday evening near Newport with a blood-alcohol level almost three times over the legal limit.

At around 5:00 p.m. police say they observed a Subaru Outback commit a motor vehicle violation on Coventry Street in Newport City and conducted a motor vehicle stop.

The driver was identified as Sheila Macfarlane, 56, of Coventry.

“While speaking with the operator, I noticed she had bloodshot watery eyes and her speech was slurred,” VSP trooper Pohlman said.

Pohlman said he asked Macfarlane to perform field sobriety exercises, and she willingly provided a sample of her breath.

According to police, her BAC was .201 percent.

She was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI and taken to the Vermont State Police Derby barracks where she was processed, fingerprinted, and photographed.

Macfarlane was issued a citation and released.
