BARTON — A truck driver made a mistake trying to turn around in Barton on Thursday, causing a section of Vermont Route 16 to be temporarily shut down.

The incident took place at the intersection of Vermont Route 16 and Roaring Brook Road, at around 11:27 a.m.

The operator of the rig, a 48-year-old man from Texas, had been traveling west when he decided to turn around, backing up onto Roaring Brook Road.

He backed into the guardrail on Roaring Brook Road, damaging it and ripping off part of the trailer bumper.

The truck was jackknifed in the ditch on the eastbound lane of travel blocking the highway, causing that section of road to be shut down from around noon through 1:00 p.m.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation, Barton Village, and a Barton firefighter responded to assist with the closure and to direct traffic.

  1. Seems like there is an increase of accidents with/by tractor trailers. They need more routes outlined for them….especially Canadian and out of state truckers! We see many trying to find in-routes to Newport and getting caught in tight places.
