NEWPORT — On the last weekend of January, students of the Welding Class at North Country Career Center held a successful ice fishing tournament on local lakes.

The tournament was held to benefit three local charities, the Green Mountain United Way (GMUW), the VT Dept. of Environmental Conservation Milfoil Eradication Project, and Bretton Hawksworth and his family. Bretton, a student at NCUHS, is battling cancer.

The students recently presented the check from their fundraising efforts to Madeleine Roy, Marketing Director of GMUW.

This was a first-time fundraiser of this type for the students and they did a fantastic job gathering sponsors, donated prizes, donated food, and, best of all, attracting 82 people to come and fish through the weekend.

This event was another example of how the students are joining together to give back to their community.
