DERBY — The Vermont State Police in Derby are saying that residents need to be aware of an identity theft scam that is going on in the area.

Police said on Monday that they have been getting reports of people receiving letters from both the IRS and the Vermont Department of Taxes.

The letters state that in order to complete your tax return, they need more information. It appears that the letters are being used to scam people into providing information that can be used for identity fraud.

Authorities say that if you receive any letters asking for information that should be on the Form 1040, contact the IRS, Vermont Department of Taxes, and the State Police.
